Tectonics Design Competition
Students and Faculty staff organise an international student design competition
‘How do you MAKE, what do you MEAN’
‘Tectonics Making Meaning’ is an international conference and student design competition which will take place at the Department of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Technology in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The Tectonics International Student Design Competition will be released on June 1st. Crucial to the success of the event is the engagement of both professionals and students. The goal is to celebrate the international and multidisciplinary character of the making of buildings. The deadline for submission is September 1, 2007
‘Tectonics is a way of talking about buildings whereby use, structure and experience are explicitly related to the materialization and the making of the building.
’ In this design competition students of different disciplines are asked to give their view on tectonics by creating a design, and justifying their design in the spirit of TECTONICS: Making Meaning. The assignment tries to involve different design and engineering disciplines. The purpose of the design competition is to encourage a debate about tectonics. Students that submit a design will be judged by a jury consisting of influential professionals conversant with tectonics. The three best entrants will be awarded with a monetary prize, a ticket to Eindhoven and accommodation for the conference, publication and exposure. The total prize money is 2500 euro and will be presented at the prize giving ceremony during the conference TECTONICS: Making Meaning.
The assignment of the design competition is as follows: How do you MAKE one of the following experiences/qualities: Arrogance; Concentration; Confidence; Elegance; Mysticism; Being overwhelmed; Relaxation; Respect; Risk; Struggle; and what do you MEAN with it? Use one of the following scales: 1:1,1:10,1:100,1:1000,1:10000.
